Dynamo/Chivas Brawl: Any Word?

"The commitment from the guys until the whistle was blown for the end of the game was fantastic. I thought it was a shame that punches were thrown by some experienced players."
- Houston Dynamo Head Coach, Dominic Kinnear (LINK)

"A brawl erupted again as Kennedy blew the final whistle, and players exchanged words and shoves. Accosted by Chivas USA players, the officiating crew had to be escorted off the field."
- Bernardo Fallas, Houston Chronicle, (LINK)

While I did catch Houston's second goal in their 2-0 win over Chivas USA, I changed the channel back to what my kids were watching before this brawl broke out. The effort of sorting this out is one reason why I'm late posting this morning. For a while, I wasn't seeing much beyond those two sentences. That made it hard to figure what kind of fallout Houston could suffer at the hands of Major League Soccer's (MLS) honchos. Based on what Jeff Carlisle wrote in his ESPN Western Conference semifinals wrap....

"But given some of the ugly scenes that transpired after the final whistle of both series, one wonders if the league will intervene like it did with New England's Shalrie Joseph and suspend players after the fact. Given the rather fickle nature of Joseph's suspension, that would be an unfortunate development."

Yes, one does wonder. Any word out there?

I finally picked up some details from a Los Angeles Times write-up on the game:

"At the final whistle, a benches-clearing brawl broke out as furious Chivas players berated referee Michael Kennedy and his assistants, George Gansner and Corey Rockwell, and went toe to toe and face to face with several Dynamo players."

Going after officials typically makes for suspension-happy edicts from the league's disciplinary officials, so that ain't good from Houston's side. Another thing: so far I've read mainly generic descriptions of "a brawl," none of which named individual players. Only this item names a Houston player - Kelly Gray, who, as the same piece points out, "had not played a minute of either of the playoff games." That report says that Gray popped off the bench and shoved a Chivas player in the back after he committed a foul - which isn't usually a good idea.

Based on that, I'd say Gray is toast. But any lurking suspensions could loom large - even this is Colorado we're talking about...

I'll be checking Soccer y futbol as religiously as possible over the next few days. I also bookmarked the corner of the Houston Chronicle devoted to soccer, just to see what could come down. Along with Carlisle, I suppose I'm hoping it's nothing. If something must be done, maybe suspend Gray just to make a statement about not condoning certain things, but I'd hesitate to go farther.

Anyway, if anyone comes across word on this, I'd appreciate it deeply if you could kick that my way.
